What We Love About This Fish:
• Rosetail Finnage: Deeply layered tail fins that flow and fold like petals in motion.
• Classic Oranda Wen: Rounded head growth that develops character over time.
• Calm, Graceful Movement: A slow, elegant swimmer that anchors the visual rhythm of the tank.
• Tank-Bred Quality: Hardy, well-adjusted, and suitable for long-term success.
Natural Habitat:
Oranda Goldfish are a selectively bred variety of Carassius auratus, developed in captivity over generations for their distinctive body shape, finnage, and head growth. While their ancestors originate from temperate freshwater systems in East Asia, Rosetail Orandas are entirely domesticated and thrive best in carefully maintained aquariums designed specifically for fancy goldfish.
Aquascaping:
Rosetail Orandas do best in aquariums designed with space, simplicity, and stability in mind.
Start with an open layout that prioritizes unobstructed swimming room. Fancy goldfish are not agile like single-tail varieties, so avoid cluttered hardscape or sharp décor. Smooth river stones, rounded driftwood, or gentle curves in hardscape help define the space without creating hazards for delicate fins.
Live plants can be used selectively. Hardy species such as Anubias and Java Fern attached to hardscape work well, as do floating plants that soften lighting. Avoid fine-leaved or fragile plants that may be uprooted during foraging.
Aquatic Arts–branded botanicals like Indian Almond Leaves can be used sparingly to add subtle visual warmth and mild tannins, but goldfish tanks should remain clean, well-filtered, and easy to maintain. The goal is a calm, open environment that highlights the fish themselves—allowing their finnage, color, and movement to take center stage.
Diet and Feeding:
Rosetail Orandas are omnivores with hearty appetites. Feed a high-quality goldfish pellet or sinking fancy goldfish food as a staple. Supplement with blanched vegetables such as spinach or zucchini, and occasional frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp. Smaller, more frequent feedings help reduce digestive issues common in fancy goldfish.
Tank Mates and Compatibility:
Best kept with other fancy goldfish of similar size and swimming ability. Avoid fast-moving single-tail goldfish or tropical fish, as well as fin-nipping species. Cooler-water compatibility is key.
Shrimp Compatibility:
Not recommended. Goldfish will readily consume shrimp and other small invertebrates.
Breeding:
Breeding Rosetail Orandas requires conditioning, seasonal temperature cues, and dedicated setups. Adults do not provide parental care, and breeding is best left to experienced goldfish keepers.
Recommended Tank Parameters:
• Temperature: 65°–74°F (18°–23°C)
• pH: 6.8–7.6
• KH: 4–12 dKH
• Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons for the first fish, +10–15 gallons per additional Oranda
Care Guidelines:
• Diet: Omnivorous; focus on sinking foods and vegetable matter.
• Social Behavior: Peaceful; best kept with similar fancy goldfish.
• Origin: Tank Bred
• Average Adult Size: 6–8 inches (15–20 cm)
• Average Purchase Size: 2.5–3.5 inches (6.5–9 cm)
